Feature: The Future of Sports Games

In recent EA Sports games, such as FIFA 08 or the latest NHL title, there has been somewhat of a shift towards placing the emphasis on the individual. No longer are we looking to play as Barcelona or Preston North End, we want to be Lionel Messi or Callum Davidson.

It’s no coincidence that this change in play style is coming around as more and more gamers enter the mystical world of online geekery; the prospect of forming a global XI, working with your team mates to out-think the opposition and putting in a fantastic individual performance is a mouth-watering one.

It seems there are at least a couple of developers out there who agree with us. The afore-mentioned EA Sports series will be implementing online leagues with persistent teams, which should add some much-needed longevity. There’s also one developer taking it a step further.

In CyberSports’ Football Superstars, the player will take on the role of a terrace hero in the making; starting from the bottom and working his (or her!) way up the leagues, training to increase abilities, buying new kit to improve stats such as pace and curl when striking the ball. Not only that, but you’ll also play the role of overpaid layabout off the pitch, with bars to visit and even WAGs to entice.

Football Superstars has a lot of potential to have every football fan with a decent connection hooked for quite some time. We’ll bring you more details as they emerge closer to the game’s release later this year. For now, watch this shiny trailer:
